Why Dogs Need Protein, Fat and Fiber in Their Food

Providing your dog with a nutritious dog food will ensure adequate amounts of protein, fat and fiber. All three are essential to your dog’s health and happiness — and all three can be found in every IAMS™ product we produce.

Unique Protein in IAMS Dog Foods

Protein helps keep your dog’s muscles and immune system strong. It also provides the amino acids necessary to build and repair proteins in the body. Many of these amino acids must be acquired through a dog’s diet.

IAMS dog food products contain animal-based proteins that provide the essential amino acids dogs need. In addition, special refining and quality assurance tests ensure that we only use high-quality, highly digestible protein sources for increased digestibility.

Important Fatty Acids in IAMS Dog Foods

Fat provides energy and dogs need two important types of fatty acids: omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in chicken fat and corn. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in ingredients such as canola, fish meal or oil, and flax. Both types are essential for maintenance of skin and coat and proper membrane structure.

Unique Fiber in Our Dog Foods

IAMS research has shown that moderately fermentable fiber, such as beet pulp, enhances intestinal health. The fermentable part of the fiber is broken down by intestinal bacteria to provide short-chain fatty acids, an energy source for intestinal cells. The nonfermentable component provides bulk for normal feces.

Using only highly fermentable fibers can cause problems, such as excess gas, while using only nonfermentable fibers, such as peanut hulls, promotes excess stool volume and provides no nutritional value beyond bulk.

All of our products contain a tailored fiber system of moderately fermentable fiber to help keep a dog’s digestive system healthy.
